AI in Healthcare
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly embedded in professional practice, while regulation continues to evolve in response. The GMC does not regulate or approve new technologies or medical devices, instead expecting doctors to apply the professional standards set out in the GMP 2024. Although the NHS has published guidance on AI use, responsibility for governance, implementation and oversight ultimately sits with individual organisations.
In January, the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) issued specific guidance on AI in appraisal. While ROs and SPs determine local policy, the recommendation is that doctors should not use AI to generate reflective entries.
AI may support and enhance personal reflection, but not replace it, and any use of AI in appraisal preparation should be declared transparently to the appraiser and recorded in the appraisal summary.
