Mandatory Training

We have recently received queries from commissioners about the role of mandatory training within appraisal. While appraisal is required by the GMC and is based on six categories of supporting information, mandatory training is not one of them. It is not the appraiser’s role to monitor or enforce compliance with organisational training requirements.

However, the GMP 2024 places clear emphasis on responsibilities such as safeguarding and responding to emergencies. Doctors remain accountable for keeping up to date in these areas and should discuss relevant learning within their appraisal. As mandatory training requirements vary between employers, organisations and specialities, doctors should refer to their employer and relevant RoyalCollege to ensure they meet expectations appropriate to their scope of practice.
