Supporting Appraisers to Deliver Inclusive, Effective Appraisal

Training Delivered

Bespoke half-day training delivered on 3 occasions (1 remotely, 2 in-person)

Focus of the Session

The training was designed to support appraisers in navigating increasingly complex appraisal conversations. Core themes included:
  • Neurodiversity and appraisal
  • Offering appropriate support and challenge
  • Safeguarding appraisee wellbeing, including use of the “How are you?” score
  • Managing and progressing challenging appraisals

Our Approach

The sessions combined short presentations, facilitated discussion, breakout groups, and visual examples.
Multiple facilitators contributed to each session, bringing different perspectives and expertise while keeping the sessions engaging and accessible

Outcome

  • 36 appraisers received an in-depth update
  • Participants reported increased confidence in supporting neurodivergent appraisees
  • The topic of neurodiversity and appraisal was identified as particularly timely and necessary
  • Appraisers felt able to take learning directly back into appraisal practice

Focus of the Session

The session aimed to build understanding of appraisal and revalidation, and the role managers and administrators play in supporting doctors. Topics included:
  • The development of appraisal and revalidation
  • How appraisal functions within the wider system
  • Supporting doctors effectively throughout the appraisal year
